I am lorraine

And I am passionate about photography.

And not just pretty pictures that look good on the gram but the raw, emotive photography that not only captures the real, intimate and often crazy moments of motherhood but images that truly capture and consider the people on the other side of the lens.

I am here to capture the stories, share their beauty and remind us all just how powerful the journey of motherhood can be.

Lorraine, your support was everything! I felt so lost in those early weeks and you held me as a mother so gently which is exactly what I needed. You were calm, nuturing and positive. I felt so much lighter after you came to visit. I loved that the support was so flexible, sometimes all I needed was a bath and some space, sometimes I needed to talk and have a hug. You always made me feel so comfortable and that everything I was experiencing was normal.

STILL BORN 💫

On the 10th July I gave birth to our beautiful baby boy Rumi River.
Born at just 23 weeks, he came too soon to stay with us in this world and his heart stopped beating during his birth.

He was born still.
Into our waiting arms.

There is so much I wish to say but there just are not the words to convey the depths of sadness we have endured or the enormity of the waves of grief we continue to navigate .

There have been days when I didn’t think I could survive the pain and days when I just didn’t want to.
And I still don’t know how we are getting through. I don’t know how we are managing to laugh after the overwhelming flow of tears. How we smile when our hearts are breaking or how we live each day with more love for each other, when the shared pain we feel runs so deep and the sadness flows just below and often over, the surface.
But we do.
We have to.
And we will continue to look for the lessons and relish the blessings that his little life brings.

And I share this part of me here with the same intentions as I always do, in the hope of creating conversation and connection.

The veil between birth and death is so preciously thin, yet we do not honour this reality with enough ritual and reverence.
We do not talk about how deeply moving it is to lose a child. How this loss shakes us and changes us to the core of our being and how life will never be the same again. We don’t create space for the grief that moves through us unapologetically and strips away the layers of shit that just don’t matter anymore. There is not enough time given to the state of vulnerability that comes when a part of you is lost.

So let us talk. Let us talk about living and losing, loving and dying, as they are one.
If anything comes from losing Rumi, I hope it can be creating an open space to share and hold stories and experiences of loss.

MOTHERS ARE WE 🍉🇵🇸

Things I know to be true:

- Advocating for one mother means advocating them all
- Birthwork IS political
- There is nothing controversial about talking about gen o cide
- Our voices, our refusal to stay quiet is more powerful than they want us to believe
- Human Rights are not just the rights of the western world
- Our privilege allows us to feel safe
- Our worlds are only different due to chance
- Our privilege allows us to turn away and pretend we cannot see
- Privilege is what keeps us separate
- You can not pick and choose which humans receive your humanity; if you do, you have none.

Choose humanity for all.
Choose to stand up.
Choose to be heard for those that cannot speak.

YOUR BODY. YOUR BIRTH. YOUR BABIES

One of the most rewarding things in this work, is getting to witness people achieve the births that are right for them.

It is so beautiful to be able to witness the emotions, the strength, the power of birth.

A power that comes from believing in your body, your birth and your babies. A power that reminds you that you can do anything, even on the really hard days. A power that gives you the strength to advocate for your rights. A power that will stay with you, always.

Despite the lack of support, the coercion and the scaremongering that these two faced when planning for the birth of their twins, they did it anyway. They believed they could birth their way. And they did.

It was such a pleasure working with this gorgeous family and walking alongside them as they courageously brought their beautiful twin girls into the world their way.

My doula support is not just about being at your birth, I am there to help you advocate for yourself along the way.

FULL CIRCLE MOMENTS

This month marks 5 years since I officially started this work and what better way to honour it than reconnecting with my VERY FIRST CLIENT! ✨

I learnt so much from these incredible humans’ and walking alongside them on their journey to meet each other, shaped who I am as a doula today.

“I naturally birthed my son at home in a birthing pool with no drugs or intervention during the 2020 global pandemic. I would not have been able to be in my full warrior power and achieve the birth I wanted without Lorraine by my side. She was my rock for 42 hours straight. During early labour we walked in the woods, we laughed, breathed and bonded with the rhythm and cycles of the birthing process. Lorraine was so patient and caring, tending to every need, every shift throughout and communicated with the Midwives ensuring the boundaries I’d requested were honoured.

Lorraine was by my side while the Midwives sat in another room, giving me space and confidence to allow my body to do what it knows how to do by itself. When my son arrived Lorraine captured our first moments together, images that are rare to see, the ecstatic feeling after birthing can clearly be seen on my face.

Over the next months Lorraine continued to visit us, and we eventually brought our children together. Here we are together just a few days ago reunited and enjoying watching our older children play together. What an extraordinary gift to not only have this birthing experience with Lorraine, but to honour our bond, our children and the power of Womanhood and Sisterhood.”
